Update: Sony has shot out a press release about the figures which also notes that the PS3’s 2009 holiday saw a 76% increase over holiday 2008, making it the PS3s best-selling year-end yet. Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, Assassin’s Creed II, Modern Warfare 2 and Final Fantasy XIII are pointed out as titles that “contributed significantly” to the system’s sales.

Original story: During Sony’s CES press conference in Las Vegas today, Kaz Hirai announced what kind of a holiday season the company’s PlayStation 3 business had last year. According to Sony’s numbers, the system sold through 3.8 million units worldwide during the five weeks following November, with 1.8 million of those in North America alone. NPD Group’s figures should arrive next Thursday, so it’ll be interesting to see how closely Sony’s numbers, along with Nintendo’s, match with theirs.
