Potential PSN premium plans unveiled

The possibility of an upcoming premium PSN service has just taken a huge leap towards reality as Sony revealed a chart of potential subscription plans, presumably to measure the public’s reaction. Sony’s spreadsheet, replicated in full below, shows four different plans – three for $9.99 a month or $69.99 a year, and one for $4.99 a month or $29.99 a year. Each subscription comes with different perks, including free access to PSOne classics and PSP Minis, an hour’s free access to each PSN game, and cloud storage space to protect player data. Other perks such as catch-up TV and online music services are also featured.
Interestingly, one of the subscription benefits listed is the much-maligned cross-game voice chat, a feature that Sony has been bashed over for failing to implement. Most gamers would likely suggest that this ‘perk’ should be made available to all PS3 owners at no extra cost, although at least Sony aren’t planning to charge for basic online multiplayer, which so far will remain free to non-subscribers.
The PSN premium plans may well heap extra pressure on Microsoft to release a no-cost version of their Xbox Live service, and charge only for extra content. So far there’s been no comment from either Sony or Microsoft following the release of the plans, but expect that to change quite soon as the PR spin gurus warm their engines.
