360 and PS3 owners might be upset that they will have to snag Nintendo’s console if they want to guide Mickey through his upcoming quest (which is a bit more malevolent than magical), but Warren Spector has his reasons. As part of GameInformer’s ongoing coverage of the upcoming Disney Interactive Studio title, Spector explained why he thought Epic Mickey made a perfect fit for the Wii.

“Would you really want to tackle convincing Halo or Grand Theft Auto players that they want to be Mickey Mouse?”, Spector asks. “In terms of finding a congenial audience, let’s go for a platform that’s known for Mario and Link and now Sonic. Come on. Honestly, with the unit sales on the hardware, it was kind of a lucky happenstance. We made the call to go to the Wii long before it was clear that the Wii was going to be, at least for now, the best-selling platform.”

While Spector has a valid point with the strong sales the Wii has enjoyed thus far, at least Sony followers have proven they don’t mind Mickey and crew’s company. Over 9 million copies were sold between the two Kingdom Hearts games for PlayStation 2 which featured a variety of Disney characters and locales. While the partnership with Square Enix is sure to have facilitated some of those copies sold, the engines seem primed for another go with Steamboat Willie on a Sony platform. For now though, Epic Mickey appearing on any system other than Wii will be just an illusion.
